Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka is officially set to replace Glenn Phillips in the Gujarat Titans (GT) squad for IPL 2025. Shanaka is expected to link up with the team soon, following Phillips’ unfortunate exit due to injury. The New Zealand cricketer suffered a groin injury during the GT vs SRH match on April 12, and was unable to continue. After a medical assessment, he was sent back home for treatment.
Soon after the match, Gujarat Titans released an official statement, confirming that Phillips had returned to New Zealand. The 2022 IPL champions extended their best wishes to the star player, stating:
“Gujarat Titans all-rounder Glenn Phillips has returned to New Zealand following a groin injury he sustained during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 12. Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a speedy recovery.”
In Phillips’ absence, Sherfane Rutherford has been receiving regular chances in GT’s middle order. However, the inclusion of a seasoned player like Dasun Shanaka adds depth and experience to the squad. According to reports, Shanaka’s replacement status has been confirmed by the News Wire.
Dasun Shanaka Joins Gujarat Titans

This is not Shanaka’s first appearance in a Gujarat Titans jersey. The Sri Lankan all-rounder was part of GT’s squad in IPL 2023, where he played 3 matches, scoring 26 runs at an average of 13.00 and a strike rate of 100.00, with a top score of 17. Due to the Impact Player rule, Shanaka didn’t get a chance to bowl during that season.
Even though his numbers were modest, Shanaka brings valuable experience, especially on slow pitches, which he’s used to playing on in subcontinental conditions. His return to GT could prove to be a strategic move, especially as the tournament moves into its critical stages.
Will Shanaka Get a Spot in the Playing XI?
With GT’s middle-order still settling, Shanaka’s arrival could be timely. His ability to anchor or accelerate innings depending on the match situation makes him a flexible option. Though it’s still uncertain whether he will break into the playing XI right away, his past experience with the team and calm temperament could be key assets.
GT supporters will be watching closely, hoping that Shanaka can deliver impactful performances and help steer the Titans toward another successful playoff run.
