Big update on retention policy ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction, there will be no RTM option

Mega auction may be organized later this year.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly wants to allow all franchises to retain an additional player for IPL 2025. Teams can retain a maximum of five players, one more than the previous edition, which could help teams like Mumbai. In such a situation, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings can retain their main players for the 2025 season.

There will be no RTM option in IPL 2025 mega auction

However, if this happens, teams will not have the option of Right to Match during the mega auction. Mumbai Indians can be the biggest beneficiary of this decision of BCCI as they will have a chance to retain Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in the team.

BCCI discussed player retainership with all 10 team owners

In a recent meeting at its headquarters, the BCCI discussed player retainership with all 10 team owners. Most of the franchises wanted to retain 5-6 players as it would give them continuity. It is believed that after considering their request, the BCCI has agreed to their point. They also believe that retaining five players will also ensure that the brand value of the franchise will also be protected.

Before the 2022 season, franchises were allowed to retain 4 players with a maximum of three Indians and 2 foreign players. However, it is not yet clear how many domestic and foreign players teams can retain in IPL 2025.

The IPL last held a mega auction in 2022 when Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants entered the league, giving all teams an equal chance in the auction. However, teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders will face a dilemma while selecting their five-member retained list.
