As the Indian cricket team braces itself for the much-anticipated five-match Test series against England, all eyes are on how the team will tackle the English challenge in their own backyard. With the first Test just weeks away, preparations are in full swing, and at the heart of these plans is India’s new bowling coach, Morne Morkel. The former South African pacer has not only brought fresh insight but has also injected confidence into the team’s young and evolving red-ball unit.
India’s tour of England marks a pivotal moment for the national side. It’s the beginning of a new era, with Shubman Gill stepping into the shoes of leadership as the full-time Test captain. With stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin transitioning away from Test cricket, the responsibility of sustaining India’s dominance now lies with the emerging generation. And for Morkel, the key ingredient to unlocking success in England is just one thing: consistency.
From June 7, the squad has been undergoing rigorous training sessions in English conditions, aiming to get accustomed to the climate, pitch behaviour, and swing-friendly atmosphere. These early sessions have already given the management plenty of insight into player form and mindset. Speaking ahead of the intra-squad practice match between India and India A scheduled for June 13, Morkel praised the players’ work ethic and determination.
“The last two days of training were exactly what we wanted,” Morkel stated in a video shared by the BCCI. “Conditions really helped the fast bowlers early on, which gives them the right boost. The batters were tested, which also helps them understand what they will be up against.”
The practice pitches, according to Morkel, have been more lively than expected, resulting in a strong contest between bat and ball. However, he added a note of caution: “I don’t think the actual Test wickets will be this spicy. But that’s not a problem. The key is to train harder than what you expect in a match.”
Morne Morkel Unveils Team India’s Strategic Gameplan for England Tour – Focus on Pace, Patience, and Preparation

One of the central aspects of India’s plan is the pace department. With Jasprit Bumrah making his return to red-ball cricket after nearly six months, all eyes are on how the team manages his workload. Morkel is clear in his approach, ease him in gradually, allow for multiple short spells, and focus on rhythm rather than results during the warm-ups.
“We’re looking to make Bumrah feel comfortable,” Morkel explained. “There’s no need to push him hard right away. The idea is to get the entire attack moving together as a unit.”
Joining Bumrah in the attack are Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna. With Shardul Thakur and Nitish Reddy offering all-around capabilities, the squad boasts a good blend of raw pace and seam movement. According to Morkel, what gives this attack an edge is the variety of skills and personalities.
“We’ve got a fantastic group. Each bowler brings something different to the table, and that’s what you need in England. But at the end of the day, the secret sauce is consistency. It’s about backing your process, trusting your preparation, and sticking to plans even when the wicket is flat.”
He stressed the importance of mental resilience and not just relying on conditions:
“As soon as the wicket flattens, bowlers tend to back off. That’s exactly when they should be stepping up. We’ve spoken a lot about owning those moments.”
This England series holds more weight than just wins and losses; it marks the start of India’s journey in the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle, a campaign they are desperate to ace after narrowly missing out on the final in the last edition. With a relatively new captain, fresh bowling combinations, and a hunger to prove themselves, the team is looking to reset its red-ball ambitions.
Morkel’s confidence in the squad’s potential was clear throughout his interactions. He pointed out the vibrant atmosphere in the camp and a collective hunger to make a mark.
“There’s amazing energy in this group,” he said. “They’re not just focused on playing well; they want to win. There’s a spark in the younger players, and that’s what you want when you’re facing a team like England in their own conditions.”
India will have their work cut out, especially with England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ strategy revolutionizing Test cricket. But Morkel believes that India has enough firepower and intelligence to counter that with discipline and smart planning.
As the intra-squad match draws near, all eyes will be on how well India translates this preparation into on-field execution. The Test series promises to be a clash of cricketing philosophies: India’s new order of calculated aggression and patience versus England’s all-out attacking mindset.
But one thing is certain under Morkel’s watch: the focus will remain sharp and unwavering. As he says, “Consistency is the key to conquering England.”
